Kindergarten Lead Teacher
Ms. Emma Hodges was drawn to teaching after leading groups of elementary school students on the UCSC Farm & Gardens, taking them on an edible journey of the 6 different plant parts. She began her career in education as a Garden Educator in school gardens in both Santa Barbara for S’cool Gardens and San Francisco with Education Outside, teaching a place-based science curriculum to PK-5th grade students. Ms. Hodges also incorporated her love for the arts into an after school Drama Club – putting on productions of Peter Pan and Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory with 3rd-5th grade students. Eventually, her time in garden-based classroom instruction led her back indoors. She started her classroom teaching with 1st grade students in Oakland, CA – marveling at the magic of students learning how to read! This is her second year teaching Kindergarten at CWC with her new group of Beetles. When she is not in the classroom you can find Ms. Emma curled up with a good fantasy book (and the occasional Netflix binge), attempting a slow jog around the Silver Lake Reservoir, or eating a variety of cheeses and breads.
