5th Grade Lead Teacher

Originally from Walnut Creek, Miss Katie Furden graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s in Science and from Antioch University Santa Barbara with a Master’s in Education along with a Multiple Subject Credential. This will be Katie’s 4th year teaching elementary school. Previously she taught preschool for 5 years and 1 year abroad as an international 1st grade teacher.

For the last three years, Katie taught fifth grade at an elementary school in Santa Barbara Unified. During her time there, she took on many leadership and collegiality roles. Katie also led an after school movement and wellness program in an effort to empower students to be the best version of themselves.  Katie went on to be named Distinguished New Educator 2019 for Santa Barbara County.

Outside of teaching, she loves traveling and helping her students learn about the unique cultures of the world. You can also find Katie practicing yoga, running half marathons, and spending time with her family. Overall, she finds value in having a growth mindset and living a healthy lifestyle that she strives to impart on the community, particularly with the younger generation.
